Song Box
International Nursery Songs is a Song Box project to collect and share children's nursery songs from many cultures to add to the songs, rhymes and games we know in York. The songs we share with our children are very precious, they help tell the story of who we are and where we come from.

How will it work?

Do you remember any nursery songs from your childhood?

If you would like to share a nursery song or rhyme from your country of origin I would be delighted to meet you. I will need help getting the pronunciation right and I want to understand what your song or rhyme is about. What memories do these hold for you? I hope that you will be happy to share them with me, and through me with many local families.

My staff and I will then gather the songs, rhymes and stories into a teaching resource.

Free workshops, at York City Art Gallery, will develop your skills and confidence to share your heritage with others. On 21 & 22 July we will participate in the "Expressions" YUMI festival in York when you, with Song Box support, will have the opportunity to share your songs and stories with the public. You don't have to do the workshop or festival. We can still include your contribution, but hope that plenty of contributors will be happy to present their material in their own words. We will give you lots of support. It will be a fantastic, colourful occasion!

If you would like to be part of this project please contact me, Thea Jacob, on 01904 634390 or e-mail tjsongbox@yahoo.co.uk.

The teaching resource produced by the project will be used by Song Box, YUMI, and local early years settings. Some project participants may go on to develop their involvement by offering to give presentations in early years settings or schools, as has happened successfully with other YUMI projects.

This project is being delivered by Song Box and is funded and supported by Arts Action York, YUMI (York Unifying and Multicultural Initiative) and York City Art Gallery.

Thea's Profile

Song Box's founder, Thea Jacob, was born in Australia and educated in Australia and Britain. Following a first career in agricultural research Thea changed direction in 1994, after starting her family, to leading children's musical play sessions. She has built up Song Box, and her own expertise, so that we now provide weekly sessions for over 200 families each week and deliver training in and beyond York. We work with children aged 0-5 and their families and carers. Song Box is committed to being affordable, welcoming and accessible to all families. We strongly believe that the benefits of musical play should be available to all children.

If you would like to know more about Song Box sessions, please contact me, Thea Jacob, on 01904 634390 or e-mail tjsongbox@yahoo.co.uk. We have Song Box groups all over York. All families are welcome.
