Finding a Voice gives these people an opportunity to be seen and heard by the rest of the community and to feel included. It aims to build their confidence and skills at expressing themselves and to promote deeper awareness and understanding among all sections of the community. Everybody likes a story and we each have our own unique story to tell. Through informal meetings, workshops and other events, JZ encourages her participants to give their account, in oral, written or other form, of what brought them to York and what it is like for them to live here. They then go on to develop other personal stories. A successful pilot project was run last year and JZ now has funding to run Finding a Voice for a year. In the long term, the project could lead to a variety of outcomes delivered in a range of mediums, including public performances, radio programmes, publications, photos, video or film. JZ's Profile JZ was born on the Caribbean island of Martinique and was educated in France and Africa. She worked for many years for the BBC World Service as a broadcaster and producer. She then was a lecturer in French, World Poetry, World Music and Radio Production at a college for mature students in Wales, before coming to live in York in 2004.
She has brought to this city her passionate interest for the rich and diverse world cultures, particularly African, Latin American and Caribbean, with a number of exciting presentations and workshops, like the 'Lyrics of Liberation', performed at York City Screen 'Read & Write' Festival and at York St John University College as a Town and Gown Lecture. As well as facilitating Finding a Voice, JZ works as a Performance Coach and is a Language and Media consultant with local schools at the Centre for Global Education. Finding a Voice went live in April 2006 and is now running with a group of 12 participants. JZ plans to start another group in September, so there is still time if you want to join.
