'...do nothing because it is righteous or praiseworthy or noble to do so; do nothing because it seems good to do so; do only that which you must do, and which you cannot do in any other way'

Aims and Objectives
YUMI aims to reflect the diversity of York's population as it really is, and to enable that population to become visible in all its richness and variety. The YUMI Centre, and the projects we undertake, will offer a range of services and opportunities for the expression of this diversity. YUMI also recognises the interconnectedness of the individual, the group, the local, the global and the planetary. A conscious commitment to ethical practice therefore underpins decision-making at every level.

YUMI has the following specific aims:

to explode the myth: York is often seen as a white, wealthy, Christian monoculture. However, it has a long history of diversity, and there are people of all backgrounds and beliefs living here. YUMI aims to enable this diversity to be pivotal in how York people define themselves

to build the relationship : working together across differences; working collaboratively to enable each others' strengths to emerge

to encourage mentoring and training : enabling individuals to share skills and resources, and those with expertise to mentor and train others

to foster empowerment : through mutual collaboration, to dare to explore our potential

to create opportunities : to enable people to create new opportunities for themselves with increased skills and confidence

to promote understanding : through intercultural exchange to become better able to define who we are as local and planetary citizens; to understand the interconnectedness of our lives and the impact we have on each other.

Why these aims?

We have several underlying beliefs that are guiding the aims set out above:

Each individual has the potential for enormous growth and change

Several individuals working collaboratively enhance this potential

Each individual's life is a story that is unique and significant, and has elements that may link it to others with very different opinions and beliefs

Each individual's life is not only unique and important, but the differences between how people choose to lead their lives may be strong. By ignoring these differences and looking only for the 'common denominator' we reduce people's unique experiences, beliefs and choices, and limit our own, and their, freedom.

Working across cultures and differences is not necessarily easy, but allows the potential for growth and enrichment to be infinite

We are planetary citizens whatever beliefs we hold and whatever our life-style, even if we do not hold this in our consciousness for very long or very often. The impact of our life-style is universal, and timeless, and each individual plays his/her own part in this. We are interdependent, however strong we are as individuals.

The future of our planet is dependent on our working together ethically in as many ways as possible to contribute actively towards a sustainable future.
